I've said it before and I'll say it again, The Matrix should have been a single-film series. The first is just *so* perfect that it didn't need any sequels.
On my first watch I just didn't get it. Thankfully the second watch on the new technology of the time, DVD, blew my mind proper. Yes, the next 2 films were disappointing
