If it is okay for Russia to invade smaller countries for not complying with what it wants. Where does that leave Cuba? I mean this is the sort of language that excuses US conduct in Venezuela & Iran.

I'd rather nobody invade another country just because you think they belong to your "sphere of influence" solely because you are a big and strong country and the strong get what they want.

What makes me really uncomfortable about this topic is people deal with in the same way others excuse the behaviors of abuse partners/rapists. No amount of anything gives you full autonomy/domination over someone else. You are not owed anything. Russia is owed nothing.

If Ukrainians are not impressed with what the corrupt/fucked/decaying Society that is Russia has to offer then they are free to tell Putin to fuck off.

An additional problem is that it ignores how smaller countries will react to this becoming the norm again. E.g. letting Russia get away with Ukraine will be the death knell of nuclear non-proliferation. That whole worldview is disaster-inducing on every level.

It's genuinely interesting how far leftists who are typically quite ideological about how things *should* be, often resort to half understood, incredibly cynical "realist" arguments when it comes to international relations. Still not sure how they justify that dissonance.

The same person who tells me we shouldn't ever give any money to "merchants of death" is capable of telling me 30 seconds later that states have always needed a sphere of influence and that this would never change.
