PSA (especially to journalists): It’s not a “rogue AI” when a badly made security harness executes scripts fed to it by statistical text generation—it’s just humans making and/or using broken software.

The AI companies _want_ you to believe that it's "rogue AI" because that overhypes what their broken statistical text generation software does and mystifies it and makes it appear magical. It's not magic. It's just badly made software.

Perhaps this is still overhyping it, but to me it reads like they made a gun without a safety and are now acting like they as creators have no agency in someone getting shot

Indeed. First thing I thought when I read that headline "oh, they're launching yet another overblown story to get the minds of people who don't know and don't care going via journalists who are clueless and lazy to get their plummetting stock prices/valuations going again". They're just so boring.

It feels like the message they're pushing is "look how powerful this technology is, how destructive, so get on our good side while you still can." It's a gangster mentality.
