I think it says something that Alison Singer nor Autism Science Foundation's comms person have ever reached out to me directly, as they're not interested in engaging with media that centers neurodiversity and disability justice.

"So who is Alison, & why does the mention of her name get me so wound up?" [Singer has/held pivotal roles with the IACC, Autism Speaks, & the Autism Science Foundation.] "She’s got some fingers in some pies, then. This is not a person who is coming across as powerless or silenced or anything." 4/

"Alison gained a lot of praise for not being anti-vax & for quitting Autism Speaks for pursuing research to that end. 'A voice for science,' she was called. By Nature no less. (To be clear, Alison is not a scientist—nor does she have a background in science. Her qualification is business admin.)" 5/

I will never understand how anyone, least of all a parent, would be satisfied to write off a child as: - can't verbalise so can't communicate, - can't understand what we're saying, - has autism so I can't be bothered to get dx for their multiple co-occuring needs, which could improve their support.

But hey, I'm one of the hellbeasts w/o significant learning needs (like 50-80% of our community, depending on which study you read), so what do I know? (...except for having family with higher needs and working with autistic kids in various types of mainstream & SEND education settings for 25yrs...)

This is the thing. I’ve received more hate, abuse & venom for existing online as an Autistic woman from those kinds of parents than anyone else & it’s not even close. The way they bully NDs who speak out, or just don’t hate themselves, is full of envy & spite. They genuinely hate that we’re happy.

Sympathy and solidarity. I'm in the same boat. The number of actual threats I've gotten, the number of people telling me I'm faking for attention, that I hate their autistic kids (lol). Almost all of it has been from Autism Moms (tm) - the bitches who make their child's autism their personal crutch.

I’m sorry. That’s awful. It’s a ridiculous scarcity mindset, harassing others bc they see their joy as a threat. If our wins get any attention, they see it as a “slap in the face” rather than a shared joy. Why are they like this? You never get this kind of mean-spiritedness the other way around.

Also, there will always be someone “more” Disabled, so fake claiming, esp at a time when governments are looking to ramp up the “scroungers & fakers” rhetoric, is only playing into their hands. It won’t spare their family the same fate, it will just mean, when it’s their turn, they have few allies.

Yeah I actually had this recently on another platform and I was literally talking about how taking away funding and early intervention is going to be terrible for children and it breaks me to think of another generation going without support like I did. Autism mum came in full attack mode. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

It's trans panic all over again: take a group of women who have legit grievances with the failure of public services, and redirect their anger at a media-constructed 'other'. Then, no one has to be taxed to improve the public services! Hooray! /sarcasm
