#Breaking: The federal government will allow private ownership of four major airports — including Toronto’s Pearson, Canada’s busiest — in a move that breaks with a decades-long arrangement that saw them run by non-profits on government-owned land.

The Neo-Liberal policy of selling off public assets to private interests inevitably results in higher fees and poorer services. BC Ferries is an example, privatized under premier Gordon Campbell, it operates under a bloated fiefdom of middle management, while service declines and fees increase.

every bad thing that the BC Liberals and the Harper Conservatives have done in the past, Carney wants to do the bigger and more irreversible version of it i expect ~10% of the population to die prematurely from the results over the next 10 years

More half truths from the Toronto Star. Canada will maintain ownership of the land, and use the proceeds from these sales to improve regional airports across the country.

The problem really is that Canada and others feel like they have to bolster private domestic business in light of the tariffs and threats to sovereignty, which risks creating more wealth inequity and the problems in the US, if regulation doesn’t increase as well.

Blatant crimes, complicity, & corruption in both 🇨🇦🇺🇸, including cross-border. But we’re supposed to accept the egregious because someone described it all “politely” bsky.app/profile/john...

part of the bad also rots our brains, cuts education, makes media beholden to corporate interests, so really i don't see a way out of this (but would love to be proven wrong before i die)

This sucks in a major, shitty way. This guy is taking advantage of his political capital to shove the worst privatization plans down the country's throat. This never, ever, EVER works out for the consumer. It's the 407 x 1000

No problem. UK airports are privately owned and the concessions on offer are much more varied with cheap options available. You have to pay $25 for a drink at Pearson.

Great. Why not privatise the highway that takes you to Pearson too? Oh wait, Ontario did that to the 407 and it worked out brilliantly...exorbitant user fees going to a foreign company under a contract that ends in 2098. So much winning.

This is disgusting. Carney wants to strip this country for parts and sell it all off. Utterly two faced and craven.

It's not necessarily a bad idea... It could free up some capital to invest in other projects. The government can keep regulations in place to ensure consumers don't pay the price. Impose a price cap on airport fees, indexed to inflation with an option for operators to petition for increases.
