If it makes you feel any better, the B&W era ended about the time Ben Casey was cancelled. I remember watching the premiere of Star Trek. In B&W, cuz we didn't have a color TV. NBC had just gone all-in on color, and I suspect they picked up Star Trek to advertise this.
