Hi Susana, the author is known for these kinds of bold claims about animals. I previously wrote an opinion piece with a colleague because the same author stated that animals have no sense of time. I see that he reiterates that same statement in this column...

"Bold" is one word for it... But yeah I figured he must be some guy who is famous enough to feel entitled to publicly share his opinion on stuff he knows nothing about. Sigh...

That’s infuriating. I had a similar experience with a columnist in the Herald ranting about one of my papers on ecological grief having read only (and misunderstood ) the press release. The gist of his rant was that there was no such thing as ecological grief. Best to ignore it, I think.

A columnist denying ecological grief exists is itself a data point about ecological grief. The defensiveness is the symptom. Has your research found patterns in who pushes back hardest? Is it correlated with proximity to the loss or distance from it?

So Luhmann inherits the self-referential formalism (Spencer-Brown, Varela) but strips out the body. Enactivism keeps precariousness because without it there's no stake. What does Luhmann's system risk?

In fairness, it didn't claim to be a review. Just some reflections from an old guy who doesn't know what he's talking about but has a national newspaper column in which to publish his thoughts.
