Does anyone else bristle at this framing? WSJ says blue books are “torturing” students with hand cramps, and “nobody likes them.” Listen, students have been outsourcing everything to AI and cheating their way through college. Blue books should be celebrated as a return to authentic human learning.

wsj.comThey Were Every Student’s Worst Nightmare. Now Blue Books Are Back.Cheating with ChatGPT has become a huge problem for colleges. The solution is painfully old-school.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that we ax disability accommodations. If a student has dysgraphia or another condition that limits their ability to handwrite, we can find another solution that allows them to type without access to AI.

Yeah, as someone who due to a learning disability took a lot of tests in the computer lab with the internet turned off (or just a proctor in the room) this is a solvable problem.

I did exams on the computer in law school (had accommodations for ADHD but everyone wrote them on the computer) and there’s plenty of exam software now that just locks down your PC. We did open book so ours allowed access to local files but no internet. Forcing just the exam window was also a thing.

“I was just saying 2+2, but to be clear, I’m not suggesting 4!” If students’ ability to type their exams instead of hand-writing them gets gated behind the terrible disability accommodation system, fucking over disabled kids will be the *obvious*, *immediate*, *inevitable* consequence

I mean in law school we had electronic blue book which allowed you to use your computer and professors could pick settings that locked you out from using any other apps on your computer. So it’s not like they need to invent new things for accommodations.

I guess I’m exactly the right age to remember the two year period where home computers weren’t quite widespread enough but typewriters were becoming obsolete. (To be clear we had a home computer and I did my college apps on a typewriter and we never owned a word processor but they were around)
