don't you ever get tired of paying $15 a month just to listen to your music?? you could simply open a program on your phone or computer for free. you could own the music you love forever. no DRM, no subscription. take it anywhere, do anything you want to it. burn it to CDs, record it to tapes!!!

sure, you could send that special someone a spotify playlist of your favorite music. but do you know what really gets the feeling across? a handmade mixtape of your favs. a physical artifact of love and effort, drawn like an arrow from your personal music library, shot straight to their heart.

if your crush leaves spotify, that playlist disappears... but your mixtape will stay with them! you know what else? having a personal music library is *fucking cool*. curating your own idiosyncratic collection is a sign of good taste! it's a big sign you're not just eating what the algo feeds you.

streaming's ethics, costs, and exploitation of artists aside, i want this thread to focus on why having a personal music library is good for YOU 🫵. and my personal favorite is that over time, it becomes a time capsule of who you've been and who you are now.

been on this journey for the better part of a year now and ohmygooosh it's so nice to just like. have the music on claw whenever I want AND it's brought me down so many cool rabbit holes too. The little friction it gives you feels great too once you get an audio setup that just feels perfect for ya

I've built a physical media stereo system that can take CDs, Cassette tapes and Vinyl, and have been building up my collection of older tunes for years! Also got like 100 blank CDs i can use to make my own mixes and playlists 🙏🙏

I've had my own library for eons now but I did use pandora for a bit and it helped me discover at least one new band; I don't anymore though, now I use word of mouth and sources like: you! to find out new musics :3
