It seems like some kind of solar heating would work well for this kind of thing. Like painting studio black strips across the driveway so parts of it get warmer - maybe not reliable enough.

Well the idea is that if any parts are exposed those warm up; if it's fully covered then yeah, total failure. But it's also totally passive!
