Something I found interesting about reading this thread is that it made me wonder how many people think of ChatGPT as primarily a tool for writing things for you I use ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini possibly 100+ times a day and NONE of those uses are to produce writing that I then share with other people

Maybe it will help a _little_ if I and others like me start saying publicly for the record that we just don’t use ChatGPT. Writing can be really hard — organizing a piece of writing can be especially hard — but I don’t use ChatGPT. If you read my stuff you’re reading something an LLM can’t do.

I also attend conferences (where thousands of people fly in for the event), watch YouTube and go on road trips - AI usage is a tiny slither of my carbon footprint, even taking into account my share of training costs

hey, we're all hypocrites, but, AI is just unnecessary and so grotesque .. that shiny new toy can solve everything. while ignoring the fact that all the environmental progress we've made over decades is being erased so that people can make cartoon avatars of themselves without having art skill

Very much depends on what you're using AI for I get a very meaningful amount of work done with it on a daily basis, mostly with code, to the point that I'm working on a significantly wider range of interesting projects I wrote this two years ago, still true today simonwillison.net/2023/Mar/27/...

simonwillison.netAI-enhanced development makes me more ambitious with my projectsThe thing I’m most excited about in our weird new AI-enhanced reality is the way it allows me to be more ambitious with my projects. As an experienced developer, ChatGPT …

I think it might actually be _saving_ the environment. The energy demand is so high that Google, Meta and Microsoft are looking into building Nuclear energy based power stations, which are super-green! Over time, energy demand from AI should go down, and electricity generation should get greener.

I'm fully aware that it's safe and wonderful- until it goes wrong. and maybe you haven't noticed, America has not exactly been doing well at maintaining things well lately. airplanes falling off of aircraft carriers. gutting of safety protocols in every realm. sure...nuclear is different
