Turns out we weren't done for major LLM releases in 2024 after all... Alibaba's Qwen just released QvQ, a "visual reasoning model" - the same chain-of-thought trick as OpenAI's o1 applied to running a prompt against an image Trying it out is a lot of fun: simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/24/...

simonwillison.netTrying out QvQ—Qwen’s new visual reasoning modelI thought we were done for major model releases in 2024, but apparently not: Alibaba’s Qwen team just dropped the Apache2 2 licensed QvQ-72B-Preview, “an experimental research model focusing on …

Wow. I just tested it, it's really powerful. This training data goes up to July 2024, Quite a few "limitations" or safety features (no financial or medical advice, etc.)

I suspected the model can't detect that many visual details accurately and tried to test that. I took the puzzle image from the transcripts above and asked it to convert the first example input and output to ascii or json. The results were both disappointing and surprisingly good.

It ignored what I asked and began solving the puzzle instead. So I let it do that. It had trouble interpreting example 3 and thought there could be diagonal blue lines but found the right rules nevertheless! And only then it noted what I actually asked and couldn't do that simple thing.
