The natural selection forces in my household are: - if you go in the dishwasher and break I won't buy you again - if you go in the washer and dryer and you wrinkle or shrink you also won't live long enough to reproduce This is the way.

+1 for the dishwasher point. But a lot of nice clothing items are just not washing machine / dryer friendly. Especially nice wool stuff. Always gutted when e.g. a merino wool piece of clothing gets screwed up by the dryer on accident.
