Mythbusters cheated (surprise surprise) They taped pieces of paper together to create a giant sheet. Folding that in half only created 2 sheets of paper stacked.

If Mythbusters can get to 10 folds with paper the size of a football field, and regular paper is 7 folds, what is the relationship between area and possible folds?

The area halves with each fold. 11 folds is 1/2048. To end at 1ft^2, you're starting with 48,000ft^2, or about 200 feet on a side. To get to 20 folds, it's 1000 feet on a side. Somewhere around 78 folds, your starting sheet is bigger than the observable universe. (I may be off by a couple of folds)

The main issue is that the more folds you have, the thicker the spine you have to create. The inner radius of the spine is negligible, but the outer radius grows exponentially. So it depends on how thin your paper is, and how much you can stretch the paper on those outer layers before it rips.
