Vendor lock-in is much easier to escape with AI. In the past, picking the wrong dependency could take months to undo (or kill the product/company). Today, a single developer can move an app from MySQL to PostgreSQL in a day (add a few for deep testing).

True, AI makes so many things easier, migrations included. But we have to be aware of the dependencies it creates. Get used to Claude and switching to another frontier model gets harder. Open-weight and local models are a good alternative, yet the dependency kind of remains.
