I rarely correct people on my pronouns because reactions can make me more uncomfortable than tolerating the wrong pronouns, but I need to get better at inhabiting my space. A colleague used ‘he’ for me so I sent them an email saying: “Hi, quick reminder: I use they/them pronouns.” Their response 🤔

I really don’t think this is hard. The only other times I’ve corrected people at work they’ve been super defensive. One lady (from HR, believe it or not) started shaking and crying and had to go home because I corrected her. Why are people so weird? Just say “Oop, sorry my bad—got you next time!”

People can be ridiculous! I'm glad you had a better interaction and thoughtful response with your other colleague, and good on you for contacting them. What's so hard about owning a mistake and then trying to do better!

Oh, yeah true! "Sorry" is what you'd expect in that situation. Without knowing her I thought she was at least being casual about it and not freaked out, but now I see the passive aggression 😕
