Without a higher education program, the University of Nebraska is going to have a hard time recruiting and keeping the next generation of higher education leaders when competing institutions offer the chance for staff members to further their education. This decision will backfire.

I’m not up on NE legislative politics, but educational insts have mostly *not* been loudly pushing back and calling for collective advocacy when legislators underfund them, often bc it lets them raise tuition. So the BOR member blaming uni members for supposed lack of activism on that is interesting

Any salary savings are going to be eaten up by constantly hiring new staff members after other universities poach away talent with offers of free graduate degrees to help them advance. If I'm Iowa State, Kansas, or the like, I'm recruiting talent from UNL that doesn't have a terminal degree.

It's embarrassing as a Nebraska native that they won't have a ed admin department at the flagship university. This serves a public good for k12 and higher education.

That also just doesn't seem like that much money to save- less than the cost of renovating 1 building, for example (my current area of higher ed expertise). Would love to know if I am wrong!

It would save some money, but not a ton. Those savings are going to be eaten up by constantly hiring new staff members after other universities poach away talent with offers of free graduate degrees to help them advance. If I'm Iowa State, Kansas, or the like, I'm recruiting talent right now.
