Families across Seattle are getting emails out of the blue from the school district about a new effort to close schools - this time branded as “mergers.” The emails provide no details about which school would close, nor any justification for the effort. It’s an appalling way to treat the public.

We will organize to fight this closure attempt as well, and will work to defeat any school board director who votes to close schools at the next election. Four of the seven seats are up for reelection next year.

Seattle isn’t losing kids, but SPS is losing enrollment to private schools. Rather than recruit those families back, SPS is engaging in a secretive closure process that will simply cause more families to flee the district. Closing schools doesn’t save money, of course. I explain here:

thebulletinsea.orgIssue 46 – Residents Across Cascadia Mobilize to Stop School ClosuresDespite clear evidence showing school closures don’t save money or improve student learning, districts insist on pursuing them. Seattle could be next.

The first and most valuable thing you can do right now: email the school board and tell them we didn’t ask for and don’t want another school closure effort. Instead we need to figure out how to *grow* enrollment. Email all seven at once: schoolboard@seattleschools.org

In West Seattle, it's obvious without saying that Sanislo will close. That building is in BAD shape and there are only 100 students there, to Highland Park's 350+.
