you know I just assumed it was my adult palate that's made the chocolate in things like hershey's or reese's taste worse to me but no, apparently the chocolate has also gotten worse!

Wow, I 100% assuemd it was me too. Some tastes change over time, I just assumed I'd 'outgrown' it? Funky.

It’s also gotten ridiculously expensive. $20 for a bag of fun sized (the shitty kind) halloween chocolate! Feels like chocolate, and coffee for that matter, are about to become luxury items again thanks to tariffs and climate change

Hershey doesn't make every single bit of American chocolate, is the thing. I'm still confused and a bit annoyed about how people's criticisms of one brand of cheap candy has somehow slandered every product in a very large country with a whole lot of chocolate makers, many of whom are still great!

No, they don't. I should clarify. Hershey developed a process for extending the shelf life of milk during wartime. It was a part of what made the transition of chocolate from luxury good to readily available snack food in the US possible. It informed the tastes of generations, to the point that...

...the other larger US chocolate operations, including Mars and the American version of Nestle, started doing it just because it was what Americans expected.

I had a Hershey's kiss my aunt brought back from America when I was... idk somewhere in my tweens probably? Then tried a Hershey's bar in Florida when I was 14, because it couldn't have been as bad as I remembered, right? Honestly I don't want to imagine what it's like now it's got "worse" 🫪😅🤣

Chocolate prices are through the roof now with tariffs. A bar of like actually good real chocolate starts at like 8 bucks. Big corps making sugar slop are never going to pay the price for real cocoa.

cheap chocolate is a feature of the world economy during the late colonial period. colonial powers introduced cacao to west africa. in an era when only a few countries were were rich, they could buy it relatively cheaply. now a larger proportion of the world demands it.

and the trees planted in that late colonial period are aging and their production is reducing. farmers don't want to replant because climate change makes it uncertain if new trees will thrive. so demand is rising and supply is falling. substitution is inevitable, followed by market collapse.

Replacing cocoa butter with "vegetable oil" often means palm oil in particular. We haven't fixed West African economies, we just added "the destruction of Asian tropical rainforests" to the mix so the executives of megacorps can stay rich.

There were two things that brought me joy and peace in this world. Mass Effect and chocolate. The world introduced me to both, and then slapped them out of my hand like a misbehaving child. Truly, these are horrible times.

I had a Reese’s PBC for the first time in a few years and the peanut butter was back to what I remember as a kid. This was after the grandson went viral and Hershey’s confessed. The chocolate has gotten worse and it pains me every time I remember that they own the Cadbury’s name in the U.S.

This is so funny to me because ages ago I had a Hershey's here in Europe as a novelty thing for waaay too much euro and it tasted worse than the worst bottom-shelf chocolate-like thing they sell for making frosting And it's *worse* now??
