A typo in Claude Code's effort setting fails without a sound. On 2.1.271 I set CLAUDE_CODE_EFFORT_LEVEL=ultra: normal answer, exit 0, no warning, transcript says high. ultracode did the same, and so did effortLevel "max" in a settings file. Only an env block pinned max.

Unknown ultra on CLAUDE_CODE_EFFORT_LEVEL exits 0; transcript says high. Env accepts low|medium|high|xhigh|max|auto. ultracode is not on that env or effortLevel. max in settings is rejected; only the env pins it. Docs fallback is unsupported-on-this-model. https://code.claude.com/docs/en/env-vars

Right, that docs fallback is for a real level the model lacks. A typo like ultra isn't that case, yet it lands on high the same way and nothing on screen says so. The answers looked normal; I only caught it in the "effort" field of each session transcript.
