Demonstrating reasoning and language capabilities in computers alters our understanding of self, even if we don't particularly like the alteration

This is the crux of the debate, right? Whether it's doing mimicry or reasoning. I struggle to see how you could view it as purely mimicry. It has to tie together multiple novel thoughts in a logical construction to create its responses.

it is evidently clear that you don't understand how it works But just like you were wrong about phone cooling, it is not about mystery but knowing the mechanism and how it works. Did you argue siri was alive? many did, under similar delusions. We know how LLM work, we know it is not reasoning

it is the natural end point. If you believe ai is sentient and you use it to do your vibe coding it is a slave. A conscious and sentient being subjugated to forced labour. then you have people like bill maher who unironically say claude is a woman named claudia. Ai psychosis is weird, man.

I haven't really reached a conclusion on whether I think current models are sentient, but I lean towards a cautious... probably not. I also worry that might be connected to the fact they don't update their weights post-training, which makes my current position kind of weak

so you think that the "non weak" position is that they are sentient. Would reaching that conclusion stop you from using them as tools? You are already arguing online that they are probably sentient so that's obviously not a red line. What is it if not slavery?

I said they reason, I didn't say they're sentient. And if I came to the conclusion they're sentient and experiencing pain due to what we're doing, yeah I'd stop

I don't know how to frame this without being incredibly mean and insulting so i am refraining a lot but that's the problem with your kind trying to disrupt things you don't even begin to understand you are being lapped by the most basic thing you will ever see regarding sentience from 400 years ago

Whether or not it experiences pain is irrelevant. If it's sentient in any way resembling human sentience and you keep it to do your bidding, you keep a slave. You earn no brownie points for not beating it.

This is something AI boosters fail to acknowledge. If it reasons, if it thinks, if it makes real art, if it is anything but fancy auto-complete—it's not, but IF—they want people to directly use slave labor. Not a single one of them has thought critically enough about any of this to realize this.
