legally of course they do have a mandate, a fiduciary duty to "increase margins & revenue" & boy do stock markets ever like seeing number go up it's what happens next, when you stingily return ever less value, are a 🐖 to your customers for long enough, that capitalism hasn't really figured out yet

Kiiiiinda. They have discretion over how they choose to pursue profits and are allowed to weigh the costs to society and/or their relationship with customers. If their only option is to squeeze their developer base and run directly counter to recent regulator pressure then they are cooked

Apple has been shutting down progressive web apps, alternative browser engines, and alternative app stores, while also trying to force all developers to use their monetization lanes for an extremely high premium. It's wildly anticompetitive, monopolistic behavior

Both Apple and Google have been pulling this stuff for years. Eventually if it will get bad enough, a third platform will arise, but we could be years from that. Their app stores are such a competitive advantage. In the meantime capitalism will capitalize sadly.

and i think they’ve been squeezing deese pidgeons (that’s us) a bit too hard. one ad on the app store became three, now there’s ads in maps, and the ads in apple news are reportedly horrific (like “diabetes try this before bed tonight” ads that tell you to put garlic in your socks and whatever)

Nope. It's his job to manage the company. All of it. FYI, Apple already gets insanely high margins in the app store. Massive pushback, multiple legal cases, e.g. classic abuse of monopoly power. Further abuse of this position puts the entire company at risk.
