traditional media might suck, but that doesn’t mean social media is the better alternative. we desperately need to rebuild a robust media system or we’re fucked.

I am appalled by the near total disappearance of local news in Nova Scotia. Local papers, local reporting is nearly non-existent. All former local papers now owned by Postmedia, along with the last daily paper, the Chronicle Herald. I want to do something about it, but I don’t know what to do.

the funding of traditional media was eroded so right-wing rags have the resources (and paywalled business/industry publications). then we’re told social media/creators are the better alternative, but that system is even better for billionaires: fund what they like, more easily crush what they don’t

all the while, properly investigative journalism and local reporting dies, creating a democratic vacuum those new models largely can’t fill. while the new system thrives even more on sensationalism that leftover news orgs have to pick up on to try to survive.

This was very next in my feed after your post ⬇️ Personally I'm a fan of The Bulwark - they have something / someone informed and interesting every day. Also The Daily Beast.
