Now that you mention it I think this is actually pretty cool, since it still seems to garner widespread understanding of purpose anyway, probably by invoking an idea of 'narrowing' for the user which they can map to their intention. Not a metaphor, just a concept.

I always assumed a mesh was at the bottom catching unwanted bits

So we didn't collectively choose the wrong metaphor, just the wrong zoom level

I showed this to my wife and she said “Are we sure it’s not a Melita?”

I mean a strainer doesn't scale well :P

and scales make terrible strainers
