I am not going to defend Robert F. Kennedy Jr, and I am not going to defend his critics either. We need to stop pretending that before him and Trump came along there was great success. There was not, the rate of overdose deaths mostly increased since 1999.

Yes, it did reduce recently, but it was still very high compared to the earlier years. And by the way, NPR has also reported that the number of overdose deaths in 25 has increased since 2024. Overdose deaths do not simply rise and fall with mental health trends. They move with the intensity of conditions that limit agency and disrupt self-regulation. Food insecurity is part of a broader deprivation pattern, and the metabolic effects that arise within that pattern are meaningful.

I agree that they don’t simply rise and fall with mental health issues. The article references both substance abuse and a number of other health issues that they suggest will be impacted by these recent decisions. The narrative expressed in the first article is they were on track.

What was this data like in 1995 - 1998? Because this curve looks SOOOOOOO familiar. My followers should be able to see it. What happened in 1998, 2015, and 2018? Do you see how this is yet another circle of a venn? This is a visual of the iatrogenic harm.

One thing that stands out in that map is how uneven the pattern is. The highest poisoning death rates cluster in states with higher reliance on federal nutrition programs and larger AI/AN populations.
