I thought it was standard procedure for firing squads that one rifle has a blank (though which one is unknown) so that the squad members can always tell themselves "I didn't kill them. I had the blank."

The inhumane nature of this is horrifying to me. Humans have no authority to continue to murder people like this. Talk to anyone who is asked to do this and it's horrifying for them as well

Boo-fucken-hoo Hope he suffered, but cue up all the bleeding hearts (so fitting in this story) who will probably defend him. From wiki since NPR conveniently didn't include: "multistate crime spree, committing carjacking, firearm robbery & 3 murders, for 2 of which he was tried and found guilty."

Apparently a blank is an old tradition, but modern firearms have a difference in recoil that means the firer knows what they shot. In Utah they used a wax bullet that feels more like a real bullet to the shooter. So it may be the case here as well, which would explain the two wounds instead of three

Really hard for me to feel any sympathy for the prisoner, as he was a horrible killer. The process took years to get to this point, everyone had ample time to "express shock and outrage" over the death penalty. Let's re-visit the crime, and express outrage over his crimes!

His crimes: "multistate crime spree, committing carjacking, firearm robbery, and 3 murders, for 2 of which he was tried and found guilty." Then there are are clowns in this thread crying that he suffered. I'm sure this murderer didn't worry about the people he killed or hurt.

A man died by firing squad—with misfires that caused conscious, excruciating pain. This isn’t justice. It’s state-sanctioned cruelty. The prison system is broken, and the death penalty isn’t just flawed—it’s inhumane. No society truly rooted in justice can allow this to continue.

The U.S. clings to execution while ignoring racial bias, wrongful convictions, and inhumane conditions. We need more than reform—we need a paradigm shift. Justice isn’t vengeance. It’s accountability, healing, and dignity.

Restorative justice centers the harm done, the needs of victims, and the humanity of those who cause harm. It doesn’t excuse—it seeks repair. A future without the death penalty is possible. One rooted not in punishment, but in transformation.

And if I recall correctly, he did not want to be executed this way. He tried to fight it. This is disgusting. Happy to live in a state that abolished the death penalty in the 1800s. My home state banned it in 2011.

Youre mistaken. He asked for the firing squad - thought it would be less painful than lethal injection (the lethal injection they've been using has been burning people to death from the inside out instead of killing them immediately).

It is funny reporting and funny responses. Who would better know that a choice of a firing squad over other options can go wrong other than a cold blooded killer?

A convicted murderer, confessed to another murder, and carjacked a man for his car. A good example for the young ones out there, DON'T DO THE CRIME IF YOU CAN'T DO THE TIME. I'm sure the people he murdered felt plenty of pain.

This, to me, is the story: the gunmen didn’t miss wildly; they hit the target…the problem is the execution staff seemingly didn’t put the target anywhere near his heart. Unreal.

Ahh, South Carolina: where the fucking civil war began AND the beating heart of DUMBFUCKISTAN. You'd think the one thing these shitheel crackers could do would be to shoot a fucking weapon.

The country is swimming in fentanyl that regularly kills thousands of people with seemingly small overdoses ... and right-wing states cannot figure out how to execute a man sentenced to death. Are these stupid people, or are they just fixated on the punishment part of the sentence?

Not Pro-life. Either Pro-suffering or Pro-incompetence, like Transportation Secretary Duffy's less than sterling airport work, Mike Waltz's broadcasting US attack plans which directly threatened the lives of American servicemen & of course Pete Hegseth (self explanatory).,
