Not true at all, the AR-15 has been available to buy from gun dealers since the '60s. The first AKs were imported in the '70s. Actual military surplus M1 Garands and Carbines could be purchased in the '50s

Years ago I bought an M1 Carbine that came with its original purchase receipt from 1964. $20 mail ordered to your door, courtesy of Uncle Sam. A quarter of a million were sold this way in the '60s. Just because they aren't commonly used for hunting doesn't mean that people didn't own them.

That's completely false, there were zero magazine restrictions, and detachable magazine semi auto handguns that held more than 6 rounds had been in production in the US for civilians since 1900. Even lever actions from the 1800s held more than 3 rounds.

Lever action yes. I don’t know about the law but most bolt action and semiautomatic hunting rifles had three rounds. The point is, children weren’t being gunned down daily before assault rifles and 30 round clips became popular and easily attainable.

No way! See what Colorado is doing? We need Trump or Musk or Joe Rogan or somebody to start talking about this in conservative circles. Some will be in favor (because they're obvious fascists). And guns are the only issue on which conservatives will tolerate no hypocrisy.

Sure, but they don't know that. That's why somebody should be hounding Trump or Musk for a quote. Musk is the better bet. He's got no GOP strategists whispering in his ear. But I think they would both be fine with some sort of gun regulation, and they both think they'll be popular no matter what.

Some of them will only get it after it's too late. I don't have guns to protect myself from a government with Hellfire missiles. I have them because a right wing militia threatened my life. The left is going to die pleading for their lives. I am going to be too busy shooting back to plead.

It's idiotic. If this goes full NAZI they will die begging for their lives. Been to a few protests now. 95% are going to get steam rolled. And groups like the Oath keepers, Proud Boys, 3%ers and the Boogloos know it.

Stupid stupid stupid. This is why reasonable people on the fence voted for the orange fucktard. You have a mental health crisis to deal with and both sides stare wild eyed at types of firearms. So damn ignorant and stupid.

ALL COUNTRIES HAVE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS. What they DON’T HAVE is 100s of millions of guns kicking around. Next you can scapegoat violent video games…other countries have those too. Sort these problems out first, THEN allow guns.

Funny that, we have atleast a rifle per man in Sweden and about 25000 "assault" rifles in homes. We have had one school shooting. Switzerland has pretty much an "assault"rifle per man, at home. Czech republic is militarizing its civilian population at a huge rate. Almost no crime with firearms.

The “Sweden has guns too” argument is tired and old. Do a little research—those guns are highly regulated (most are associated with military reserve/service), and there are way way fewer of them per capita than in the US. Don’t parrot gun industry BS

If I see a lot of this I would start to wonder if they want to take your guns🤔 Not that I disagree at all in this or taking guns.....🍁Canadian here But it does make me wonder if they will try❓ ....after all they are in dangerous waters ....going deeper j/s

Acquiescing in advance is certainly what I’d expect from the modern dem party. Nobody, historically, has rid themselves of state lvl fash infestation with sound reasoning and superior education or debate skills. I wish it weren’t so, but Denial is not a valid strategy.

This is an obvious attempt to bait the Musk Administration. Hopefully, some journalist will get a comment on it. If Musk is against it, then that's just business as usual, no loss. But if he likes it (which is quite possible), I see some division in store for his base.

Is it a coincidence that gun restriction/safety laws are passing at the same time a fascist gang has taken over the government, destroyed democracy and created a lawless police state?

The Far Right has more guns buried than the left owns. Good luck if/when the Proud Boy or Oath Keeper down the street does not want you in their neighborhood any longer. Guns (and the training to use them) are like a first aid kit. It's dumb not having the ability to protect oneself or family.

Yes. People hear the word "semi-automatic" and think it's some scary new military technology but don't realize the tech has been around for well over a century and the vast majority of guns owned by civilians in the US are semi-auto.

That's what I thought. 🤔 Honestly I didn't realize Colorado was on that end of the Spectrum when it comes to gun control. South Park had me thinking they were more progun than that. Hey you learn something new everyday.

I don't think this is going to be popular with Coloradans; I also don't think their legislators care. I heard from one Colorado resident who contacted his legislator and was told "if the law interferes with your hunting buy a different deer gun." He doesn't hunt.

Colorado is sick of its school children getting killed. Seems like we’ve seen more mass/school shootings here than anywhere else. Columbine, Aurora, Highlands Ranch, Arapahoe, Platte Canyon off the top of my head.

Part of me wonders if the plan is to do just that. I remember a lot of talk about how the government hates large capacity magazines and a law like that would put a stop to them.

I’m a librarian who started my career in CO & now work in a MA city. There was an active shooter incident in the vicinity of the main library yesterday and they locked down public bldgs for an hour. Coworkers were freaked! I was like, ho hum, I experienced this often in CO. Good on the state!

My gun and magazine jammed several times at the firing range recently. It was mainly due to the crappy range ammo I got on site. Still, I don't want to have to disassemble the damn gun if someone's shooting at me.

Those were design for close in fighting and a massive shot pattern. They are loud as fuck and look like a cannon… they are perfect for defense in your house! I own several muzzle loading guns. Pump shotgun is the correct answer. Load it with bird shot. The sound chambering a round is all you need

why do libs have the dumbest gun laws. the vast majority of gun murders are committed with simple handguns. we need background checks and such. but banning certain kinds of guns is so pointless

as a leftist, I don't really disagree with this. Common sense gun laws to me means making sure the people who are getting them are knowledgeable, responsible, safe, and sane. If you are all of those things, have an AR idgaf.

Bingo. IMHO the constant focus on the tool also detracts from finding a real solution to the problem of parents raising shitty humans. The guns have always been here, so what changed? I would venture social media is also a significant factor.

I hesitate to just blame parenting cuz that always devolves into stupid shit about traditional family values or needing a man in the house or whatever bs. We just need a healthier and happier society, and until we have that guns just can't be available to absolutely everyone all the time.

The existence of profit driven social media def caused immeasurable harm, and our lack of healthcare essentially abandons unwell people. We should make efforts to address that, but in the interim make sure gun owners are up to snuff and don't just let some dude walk out a Walmart with a AR15

It's interesting that the state is right wing and always has been and in states that support the right wing government have lax gun laws, while left leaning states that threaten the right wing government have very restrictive laws. It's almost like it was designed that way.

I don't know anymore. I would have thought I'd never own a gun, but these days with this government and their fans, maybe this line from the Edith Keeler episode of OG Star Trek is too true today "right idea, wrong time".

That's been our thinking, too. Hold off an armed mob? Probably not. Stop a looter? That could work. Then what do ya do with the body? One gun? One for each of us? Need training so we don't end up shooting each other.

Wow. Just wow. What is wrong with your heart, soul and brain to not think that incremental progress is better than nothing. IF IT SAVES ONE KID?!!! I’m convinced the American ppl are amoral. No souls, no values. Empty vessels. This is huge. It’s progress. Grow the f up.

How unexpected! It sounds as if the laws are full of loopholes, but those can be tightened up in future years, e.g., the capacity of the attached magazines can be reduced, "hunting" weapons can be further restricted, more time-consuming and expensive training can be required. Every little helps.

Knowing what I know of the SCOTUS, this law will be overturned almost immediately by the Roberts court. Alito, Thomas, and Kavanaugh will trip over each other to write a draft majority opinion within hours of its passage.
