The Cu–Zn sites facilitate nitrate reduction to *NH2, while neighbouring Au–Zn sites enhance CO2 reduction to *COOH and urea formation. This overcomes the kinetic mismatches between carbon and nitrogen intermediates, enabling the selective production of urea.
