Good callout! Definitely making a note of this. I always wind up using `git grep` in repositories because it only searches tracked files and I haven't run into a case where it's perceivably slow. I feel like it's an often overlooked/unknown feature of git.

You can do `echo '!/.github/' >> .rgignore` in your repo root and that will forcefully whitelist the directory.
