this is something I do worry about, not because I think the GOP are even doing this necessarily--but because I think that on the left we are uniquely vulnerable to giving up in disillusionment if our wildest dreams don't come 100% true.

I’m conspiratorial enough to wonder whether the gop freakouts are an attempt to manage expectations so that anything short of a blowout is a disappointment www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...

the fact that everyone always frames Texas as Lucy & the Football instead of a mountain we've been working to climb is a perfect example. Instead of "man we got closer to the summit this time, let's regroup" the narrative is, "god we got fooled into thinking it would happen AGAIN, we're idiots"

we're only idiots if we think we should be able to be victorious in every race the first time we try. we're only idiots if we think it's only worth it to try when we're sure we're going to win. they're spending millions of dollars to try to stave us off in TEXAS AND KANSAS. that's winning already.

no matter what happens on election night, these bozos had their hands on every single lever of power. they had all of our most powerful institutions tripping over themselves to comply. they had the media swearing that we were in a new golden age of conservatism. now they're worrying about NEBRASKA

everything has been uniquely terrible and we have all been through so fucking *much* in the past two years. but god damn it y'all, that's what we did. that's what PTA moms with whistles & leftists with signal chats and wine moms showing up at city council meetings ready to sweep the leg did

so fuck 'em. vote like you're trying to give each and every one of them a god damn election night heart attack. and every place we don't quit win, dig the fuck in because I want them to never get a peaceful night of sleep again because they are having feverish tribunal nightmares.

My mother was angry that I took calculus my last semester of high school (I learned a lot; it's been relevant to my nerd life. I got a B) because why would I willingly take a class I didn't know that I could ace? I try to make that an attitude I don't succumb to.

In a way, I suspect some GOP politicians are a little sad that they managed to overturn Roe v. Wade, because they didn't legitimately believe as much in that destination as in the rabble-rousing power the journey gave them.

After all, abortion only became a super big deal to them when they could no longer carry signs saying 'Good Christians for Clean White Schools' and they needed a new crowd-thing. Maybe that's why they're leaning /so/ hard into transphobia now. They want that rush.

They don’t believe in anything but their own power. They don’t care about abortion, they don’t care about immigrants, they’re not bothered by trans people. They just use whatever scapegoat is convenient to maintain power.

Honestly, American football is a good metaphor. It's about consistent incremental gains. Or at least the most successful teams can consistently incremental gains. But folks want one election to win it all forever instead of one election and then you ride your congresscritter's ass in shifts to make

--their service to you and yours a burden and affliction to them until they go from being the rep you have into the rep you want.

Yeah, watching my Texas suburb move from red to blue over the 3 decades I lived there was amazing to watch happen and the result of a LOT of long, hard work by people Incremental change over long periods of time? DRIP IT SLOWLY INTO MY VEINS, that's the stuff
