Threadception here but omg, I feel like KJ & Racheline have absolutely put a finger on something that has made me feel insane about all of this. I talk about imaginary people as if they are real entities with goals, desires, motivations etc all the time. I tell Donna, "no he would never do that"

Interesting thread on interesting thread, and kind of making me wonder if this is part of the very strong author pushback against AI. Obv the stolen books, the attempt to put many kinds of artists out of work, the copying of our voices...but also, we make up imaginary people all the time.

You are all identifying the thing that makes EVERYONE insane about these ai interactions -- some to psychosis. ai may be able to "speak" in first person and imitate human language patterns, but it is missing emotional valence, which is inextricably tangled with human cognition and language 1/

Or, god forbid, you ignore the wrongness and lean into the unreality -- the false affirmation, the pretended understanding, the incongruity of affect. You learn crazy nonhuman communication. Incongruous "affect" breaks our brains. Rather quickly. We've let this abomination into our schools . 3/3

Your brain notes the void in the fake communication, but struggles to express what it is. Because emotion is hard to capture with words. Some would say, almost impossible. There is no real person/brain on the other end. It feels crazy and aversive and distasteful. You KNOW something is wrong 2/

My literal job is making up imaginary people that feel so real that other people believe in them. Other people also say, "no he would never do that" because I have conveyed such a sense of humanity via careful words that they can guess what the character would think. genAI is terrible at that.

Every email I get written with chatGPT is like someone has created a vapid soulless imaginary person who is looking at me with an empty nothing looming behind every sentence and it gives me the fucking creeps. And that's before I read the words which are cult-level love bombing incoherence.

I grew up on horror movies so chatGPT makes me think of the bit where something has replaced/is imitating someone in your group. It hits uncanny valley in a violent way. (I'm sure I've been fooled, but generally speaking.)

When I'm surrounded by chatGPT writing I feel like Meg from a Wrinkle in Time, stepping into the streets of Camazotz. yes everything is very pretty. but it's wrong. it's so damn wrong.

And this is absolutely not to say I think everyone should notice this. I actually am kinda too proud of the work I've done to become a strong character writer to imply that. I've spent 18 years where every single day I think about how to make imaginary people feel real. This is my main event.
