there was a point during the first boss fight (no spoilers) where I walked away for like 2 weeks b/c I was irritated, but I picked it back up & as the book went on I felt like I could see which parts were deliberate and the point they were trying to make more clearly. I enjoyed enough to get book 2!

I’m really interested in hearing what you think of Dungeon Crawler Carl!

I’ve seen a decent number of people bounce off the series because of the first part of book one, and yeah, that first boss fight does just feel sort of mean at first. Without adding spoilers, the purpose of it all does become clear pretty quickly after that.

We were talking about it in the group chat, and I feel like if the gym bro had been first I would have responded to it entirely differently. Also the narration added a layer of "do I have to listen to men talk like this in my own kitchen" that was hard to tolerate in 2026. LOL

The problem, of course, is that dude SFF authors have earned very very very little trust as a collective and if I don't know someone or have a strong trusted rec (in this case I did) that sort of thing will absolutely make me go "I ain't got time for this"
