The more I debate awful, awful AI bros, the more I've come to appreciate that intent really is the core difference between consuming and creating.

This is something that people without illustration experience tend not to see: every single thing in an image was put there with intention, nothing can be incidental. A writer says "the car," but an illustrator says exactly what model, inside and out, from every angle, and it's not optional.

Had that discussion this week and to explain "what's art?" I tried to explain the basic artistic act of selection - what's to include, what's to omit - but they didn't even know Marcel Duchamp and his Readymades.

I recently tried to explain why a small child's drawing of a pig will always be 1'000'000'000% better than a generated AI image of a pig. And it basically boils down to "the kid *wants* to draw a pig!"

ive been making a similar argument since 2022 Your kid's drawing of a pig is purely and exclusively your kid's understanding and experience of what a "pig" is, unique to them. Anyone else would draw it differently based on their own experience, but she drew this and that's the entire point of it all
