I mentioned my League of Women Voters forum a fortnight ago, and I still wonder if it's more harmful to not have rules, or to have rules you do not, or cannot, enforce?

Just gonna say it: "open debate" is a format that privileges combative men conditioned to assert and take space from others. And it does nothing to help inform voters.

My Republican opponent and I were both respectful of the timekeeper, I'll give him that. But when the moderator opened the forum with her recital of the rules, including no display of campaign material in the forum room, while three people in the audience were wearing his campaign shirts...

...and there was no admonishment for them to cover/change/reverse their shirts, I struggle. I live in the most Democratic county in Iowa, and LWV has asked Democratic colleagues to turn their shirts inside out before.

This is primarily on Phil and his supporters. I think LWV should have said something when they disregarded the announcement. I didn't say anything, maybe I should have.

There’s always something we think we should have done, no matter how things go. Not the head space where anything positive is going to come to mind after the fact. Only negative.

I was there, noticed the messaging, & viewed it as breaking the rules. That set me up for the candidate portion of the forum with a negative view of PH and his ability to understand conventional political dynamics. I was more concerned with his conspicuous display of a Christian cross on a necklace.
