This is such a good point. But beyond this LLMs are pissing in everyone’s beer. Noisy DCs, rising electricity costs, end of consumer technology, spamming open source projects, list goes on. This is not a partisan issue. Ironically a better “rollout” probably could’ve made the worst uses palatable.

As Brian puts it: "It fails to account for the fact that most of the dismissals of AI are not related to the technology, but AI’s political economy... Developed and sold by SV oligopolies, for the benefit of tech billionaires, with the intent of surveilling, deskilling, and eroding labor."

I’m seeing groups that are not particularly political and were excited by things like Midjourney a two years ago sour on AI. Most technologies have a stage where their harms are contested, but move fast and break things mentality just speed ran that.

Seriously, reject this partisan framing! There are dozens of examples of people rejecting or critiquing LLMs as is, not because they’re leftist but because the technology hasn’t benefit them while degrading things they care about.

I think even accepting this left/right framing is wrong. it’s clear LLM technology has limits; that’s not a political issue. People reading this as some reactionary left position are projecting exactly what they claim are “the left’s” biases.
