In 1931, the Irving family, who lived on a farm on the Isle of Man, claimed to have been visited by Gef, the Talking Mongoose. Gef supposedly told them "I am a freak. I have hands and I have feet, and if you saw me you'd faint, you'd be petrified, mummified, turned into stone or a pillar of salt!"

I'm less impressed he could allegedly speak, and more impressed at his alleged extensive English vocabulary. You would think a mongoose would have different priorities if they could verbally communicate. "Give me food and leave." "Did you forget to say 'please?'" "No."

It is the sure way to detect a true speaking mongoose from the average charlatan. If the creature says anything other than a string if curse words or demands for food, that is no true speaking mongoose. Many such cases.
