1 is not the answer. I know local elections are coming up and lots of petrol heads may be voting but encouraging fossil fuel usage which is the cause of current mess is a vote loser with me. won’t stop shorthaes. When bus fares were capped at £2 I used the bus 3x the amount I do now.

That's a long term problem that needs to be properly addressed. Government has failed to put measures in place. This is a short term fix during a crisis planned to last 3 months.

Why not give everyone free rail, free bus journeys, free fuel, free mortgage payments? You’ll never be in government so you can promise any old guff.

"The £2 billion cost would be covered by the unexpected extra tax revenues the Treasury is raking in due to higher fuel prices. If the crisis drags on for longer and fuel prices stay high, our package could be extended until they come down."

Projecting beyond these suggestions, the best way to solve a problem is to take inspiration from another country that has already solved the problem. While it's 'nice' to design a policy that works, I'd rather have one picked of the shelf of 'it works for them' as it's quickly to enact.
