It can no longer be denied: Climate change is progressing unabated and accelerating. 1.5°C limit for global warming agreed upon in Paris may already have been permanently exceeded. 3°C limit could be exceeded as early as 2050' 2/8

'Increasingly extreme weather conditions are making predictable agriculture difficult, and in some cases impossible. There is a high risk that the limits of habitability will be exceeded in some regions of the world. 3/8

Decisive collective action can prevent loss of control 'We therefore call on all political actors in Germany to become aware of the real danger posed by progressive man-made global warming and the urgency of action.' 4/8

'We therefore call on all political actors in Germany to discuss the withdrawal from low-lying coastal regions on the North and Baltic Seas.' [Living in the coastal region of the North Sea with my family, this hits hard] 5/8

Good that they’re catching up. This is from 8 months ago:

“At 3C or more of heating by 2050, there could be more than 4 billion deaths, significant sociopolitical fragmentation worldwide, failure of states (with resulting rapid, enduring, and significant loss of capital), and extinction events.”

Although estimate ranges vary. With China’s faster emissions reduction 3C might be breached 3-5 years later - eg 2053-56

That is a very optimistic estimate. 3C will be reached 50 years earlier than that. Warming has accelerated and now is at almost 0.4C per decade (and that is also increasing). Our climate is currently already at 1.5C of warming, and by 2035-38 will be at 2C, 2044-47 at 2.5C and 2053-56 at 3.0C

CO₂ emissions increasing or decreasing a few percent won't impact the rate of warming over the next 25 years much. That's mainly driven by aerosols and (to a lesser extent) methane, which both have a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than CO₂ (aerosols only days) On China: bsky.app/profile/glen...

These are GHG emissions. Even if CO2 peaks in 2025, likely that GHG emissions will still increase because of growth in CH4, N2O, and F-gases. 2/2
