The sentiment "It can't happen here" is something of a self-negating prophecy.

In other words, criticize us, even be smug about it, but take that incredulous disgust and turn it towards action, instead of inaction. Assume it can happen where you live within ~15 years, and ask yourself what you could do today to help ensure it doesn't.
