#nufc One for the tacticians: Why don’t teams leave a player on the halfway line, or on the last man, when defending deep? Seems to me that it would force teams back and provide a dangerous out ball. Or do you really need all 11 behind the ball?

Managers rarely leave a player near the halfway line during corners because statistical analysis shows that committing all 10 outfield players to the penalty box significantly improves defensive security against modern, highly coordinated set-piece routines.

Modern tactical data suggests that the small chance of launching a counter-attack from deep does not outweigh the higher risk of conceding a header from an undermanned defense. Also, when zonal marking, it's advantageous to have players on the edge of your box to win second balls/headers

I’d love to see the data on that. I can believe that packing the box with 10 outfield players would reduce first phase goals against, but I wonder what the data after the initial cross looks like.

Brilliant minds…😎. Refreshing to see Chelsea leave 4 up for corners yesterday. Logic would seem to dictate that if everybody is within 30 metres of the goal then it’s harder to score in the other one.

Even one rapid attacker on the halfway line. Punt it long to clear it and make it a foot race. (Football tactics probably aren't as simple as this!)
