So I said I was tired of the discourse about NHJ and I am. But I am also astonished at the number of people who are certain their choice is better. Because the parenting report card isn't in yet and baby, some of your kids will be asking why you made them go to a racist school based on test scores

If you knew me when the kids were little you remember me taking it to hell in IEP meetings every year. Kiddo was at a top ranked diverse school and Husbeast and I still had to play good cop/bad cop at every meeting. People overestimate their parenting acumen and underestimate damaging systems

My kids were at an award winning public school in a mixed race, mixed income area. And it still got quiet on the creek when I had to come in that building about a problem. Because nobody wanted to be next on my to do list. I called central office, a lawyer, and the state board. My kids are great

I was a terrorist. Like, pretty sure there are still people calling me that bitch about meetings from 15 years ago. Because fundamentally no part of public education is working to provide great outcomes without pressure. Oldest has a degree, a job, and a family. Youngest is still in college.

I legit never knew this is how it works in the US, and my parents never knew either. My family thought my only option is to toughen up so I can put up with whatever circumstances I end up in, and never complain 🫠

Yeah it legit never occurred to my (then-recently-immigrated) parents that American schools could be bad, especially ones that were nearly all-white, and certainly not that parents could criticize the schools or teachers. Blew their minds.

Trying to explain to them that our teachers were racist, and that it was impacting our ability to learn, was basically impossible. And of course there was no structural remedy for that.

Oh no, knock all that shit over. Regularly. Get a lawyer if necessary. Meetings with school administrators and the district and maybe the state board of ed if you have to take it there.

My kids had a "If the adults fucked up? Call mom. If we fucked up, call dad" rule for themselves. My parenting was far from perfect. It was effective and we have good relationships. But chances are excellent we will all be getting C's and D's in some categories on our parenting report cards

I read yesterday's article with compassion for everyone in her family. If people are mad, get mad at terrible racist education systems that fail Black children (and systems that fail poor kids, disabled kids, etc.).
