as a longtime telecom beat reporter I spent years tracking how telecom monopolies dominated markets then nickeled and dimed users with predatory usage surcharges so it's wild to see a market that isn't even established or profitable yet jump right to the fee enshittification

arstechnica.comAI costs how much? GitHub Copilot users react to new usage-based pricing system. Some report burning through their whole monthly "AI credit" allotment in a single day.

like you're supposed to wait until you've dominated market share before you price gouge the audience with arbitrary and ever soaring usage fees, silly at this rate you'll drive AI users to on-device Chinese and open source alternatives and then you'll all be very sad

It's like a pusher who didn't work out that "the first taste is free" isn't a good business model when every day you have more competitors on your patch of turf doing the same thing.

just all in a mad dash for the trough without thinking things through, as this weeks Google and Meta fuckups attest

DeepSeek is currently providing their models at an insanely low cost for exactly this reason, i'm sure it's costing them a fucking fortune but the benefits are twofold: 1.) possibly hasten the demise of overleveraged American firms 2.) scoop up a ton of extremely valuable American data

I’m not sure it’s an apt comparison, the per user cost of telecom and AI have different considerations. Tokens aren’t transparent though, and user behavior can really shape costs for an organization at scale.

The producers of AI know what they are doing. Like a drug dealer, they give you free samples until you are hooked. The goal is not only to shift away from human labor and toward AI, but to shift all of those dollars spent on humans to AI peddlers.

But this isn't going to be a natural monopoly, there are going to be choices, including on-device localized open source and international AI software

"oh you're trying to take all your data and established workflow to an open source or Chinese on device alternative? Have some very bad news for you"

I don’t even think the current tokens are at “enshittification” levels. I think they’re probably still losing money on them, it’s just that they’ve lost *SO MUCH* money that they have to start charging

The thing that gets me is that businesses can fairly easy just laugh and say "Nope". Over the last week, i sat down a with a buddy who's an arch at a company that wants on prem AI. Yeah, the initial outlay was expensive (~30k). But after that... it's just electricity. And no surprise half a

billion inferance bill if you forget to set caps. Heh. Yeah, it's not frontier model effective either, but it's still a useful force multiplier that costs less than the subscription services would, and lives in the companies control, with the company owning their own data.

Even funnier? Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini... They'll all help you do it. So you really can do the whole "Buy a 3d printer, print a 3d printer, return your original 3d printer" Only its "Rent an agent. Have the agent setup an agent. Stop renting the agent"

It's the natural conclusion of this multi trillion dollar version of the prisoner's dilemma. If hyperscalers and neoclouds had waited and built out AI infrastructure slowly and thoughtfully, maybe costs could be contained. But the idea of being left in the dust forced a rapid and expensive buildout.

It can take years to just figure out a container for a product. It has to not be destroyed in transit, have a logo and info printed on it, be visibly distinct on a shelf, potentially protect whatever is inside from extreme heat or cold. For AI apparently we are just meant to shoehorn it in and pay

As a senior engineer I just used ai to help me design a light weight radio protocol analysing protocol behaviour in various scenarios, the trick is to know how to drive it, not take every thing it says a gospel but a simplified assistant

yeah though for your average pleb, who has like zero media literacy and has had what the software is and can do broadly misrepresented to them by terrible people, it gets more complicated

The banks are looking at projections and holding out their hands for some of that 800 billion back. None of these are within 72 months of b/e let alone ROI. So they are desperate to show positive earnings. Turning the screws while the S is still on the bottom half will cause defaults.

I use a number of models to code. Claude works best for me right now, but DeepSeek is plenty good enuf, and 10x cheaper. DeepSeek is valued at ~$65B, meanwhile OpenAI and Anthropic raise money at a BS valuation of ~$1T each. Investors are all in.. for a rude awakening. Now, if you can't code.. 1/

They are pricing this stuff like clueless, non-creators. Like if you sold me a kit-Ferrari, I prolly wouldn't know it from the real one (I'm not that into cars). Likewise, if one's not into coding, the quality you deliver using an LLM will royally suck Same w/ writing, art, science, everything 2/2
