LA friends, this may sound like a silly question, but I am serious: Why do you have a team named "Dodgers"? What exactly are they dodging? The baseball? Sportsball team names rarely make sense to me, but usually they're supposed to be inspiring in some way, aren't they? This one just seems weird.

By way of apology, I just saw the name because your team lost an important game that made the news. I wasn't attempting to rub it in, since I couldn't care less. (I'm starting to find some interest in the "Valkyries" basketball team, but that's a new development 😀.)

Ken Burns’ documentary explains this. When they were in Brooklynn, folks would cross the streets and “dodge trolleys” to cheer them on. They are the “trolly dodgers”, named after the fans. At least this is what I remember from watching the doc, anyone pls correct me

Thank you for the answer! I guess that makes sense, although it doesn't seem like it would apply to Los Angeles so much. I was really afraid I would piss people off who thought I was trying to malign their team. So I appreciate a serious reply. 🙏

I don’t think most sports fans would care, in fact they would be happy yo talk about their team! It’s a good question! The Dodgers are one of the oldest teams. In 1957 the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn, NY to Los Angela. The team was named in 1880s I guess- peak trolly infrastructure time!
