On the eve of Kubecon I think it's time we acknowledge the cloud hasn't lived up to the hype It is an amazing tool that provides a ton of convenience, but long term the promises turn out to just be marketing hype

I'm not only talking about the cost of the cloud. Although, that turns out to be a big broken promise If you're renting compute from a major cloud provider, your spending significantly more than you may need More details here thenewstack.io/cloud-vs-on-...

thenewstack.ioCloud vs. On-Prem: Comparing Long-Term CostsThe convenience of cloud services is undeniable, but companies need to rethink if it’s financially sound long-term.

Once you've cost optimized your compute (reserved instances) and reduced your cognitive load (platform) you have a yearly budget spend on servers with a bespoke, lock-in you've built. It's a lot like a data center but 10x the cost

I've been skeptical of Kubernetes for a long time for the same reasons, but recently I started reconsidering. Self-managed k8s is less of a pain than it was five years ago, and - if well thought - it can enable interesting levels of standardization/simplification.

I agree. Making self managed k8s dead simple is why I joined @siderolabs.com I’ve tried a lot of k8s products and Talos + Omni is the easiest to maintain But I also think for a lot of companies VMs are a better fit for what they need and are usually less complex

Absolutely! Boy oh boy I've seen so many k8s clusters that could have been a $20/mo VPS 😄 (for SCaLaBiLiTy, ofc). Didn't know Sidero Labs and it looks like great stuff! Do you also address the ingress headache for bare metal clusters?

“You may also have teams dedicated to performance engineering” isn’t the same as “you have cost optimization teams” From what I’ve seen performance “teams” (1-2 ppl) do autoscaling and utilization. Cost optimization teams look at baseline reserved instance spend and deleting unused logs

Iiiiiiiiif you can get and keep talent. And success disasters can’t happen. And you can weather outages. And you rock at cybersecurity. And capital is cheap. And you can predict needs in advance. And no innovation from three multi-trillion dollar multinationals could possibly help your business.
