the way the right has boiled discussion on transness by saying trans women will always be “biological males” is despicable because taking cross hormone therapy literally changes your biological birth sex. your sex and sex functions is no longer the same after taking hormones for an extended time

by taking hormones you are literally, acientifically, changing your biological sex. and that’s a fact the right doesn’t want to ever have to confront

ironically liberal allyship of the 2010s has likely played a part in this too. it meant well, but promoting “sex is seperate from gender” plays into rightwing transphobic framing, in that you are playing dress up but your biological sex is wholly seperate

I feel like the language is at least a partial issue, because until recently to me, “”biological male”” was the same as AMAB, but AMAB/AFAB is a much better description, and one that those freaks would never use

(! i'm linguistically bothered by "transsexual" because it reads more like a sexual attraction (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, etc) than a form of biological sex (intersex, perisex, altersex). i think transsex would be a much cleaner term tbh !)

(! i see this upset someone who identifies as transsexual, so i wanna clarify that i don't want it erased! as i said deeper in the thread, i'm bothered by it in the way i'm bothered that flammable and inflammable are synonyms, but i understand now how voicing that can hurt, so i won't anymore! !)

What happens when people sitting on the fence so long the end of the post has reached the bend in their intestines try and reason or argue down genocidal fascists to some reasonable middle ground--it just gives them further ammo to push their policy through in degrees

Horrific misinterpretation of "sex is separate from gender." Even if libs don't fully understood the anthropological/sociological underpinnings of the statement it doesn't erase the reality of it.

Yeah, but: I don't want to be doing graphs with T doses, E doses, and half-lives to work out what bathroom to use like, I changed my sex (several times, lol) but that's between me and my doctor - the rest of you don't need to know anything but my *gender*.

Buying into the idea that sex *matters* is buying into the transphobes' framing. (Maybe excluding sports - but hey, it's not like 20 years of scientific research about *that* mattered to the 'phobes either)

it’s mostly a relic of online transgender discussion these days, but in the 2010s the average liberal defense of trans people was to outline the difference of gender and sexual biology and it’s just not helpful

(! is it a relic? we still see it very much today in our pretty radical leftist spaces, it's a good counter to bioessentialist rhetoric and it can also be used to highlight how intersex people, y'know, Exist, independently of their gender identity. !)

(! ig a more broad acceptance of identity is generally better, and we do *very* strongly support that (hell, we're plural by choice, and i'm *rambley* for crying out loud, i'm not about to police your identity x3), but i think sex≠gender still has its place !)

I think it was a wise move at the time actually, since before then a line was often drawn to distinguish medically transitioned people as "real trans people" and to further other those who couldn't/hadn't/didn't want to medically transition.

Is "transsexual" falling out of the lexicon also a part of this? It was often used as a slur, but with modern medicine it seems like it would be more accurate for some people (not every transgender person is on hormones, etc). I haven't seen much effort to reclaim it, so maybe I'm way off base.

i honestly think a lot of it was also just plain ignorance. i didn't learn a damn thing about how hrt changes your actual sex until i was on it (10 years after coming out as trans). i didn't think to push back against that rhetoric because i didn't know.

they don’t wanna hear it. they want sex and the associated roles to be innate and irrefutable so they can uphold patriarchal rule and reduce womanhood to the ability to reproduce. no amount of logic or shared knowledge will ever change their minds if it means they lose their grasp on power.
