on this point in particular: egs sales are so bad it's common for devs to share and compare out of disbelief, and often what you find is quite popular games are selling only in the double or triple digits of copies last i checked, my game had sold (drum roll please) five

did a blog post of my Thoughts on the Actual State of Unreal in 2026, how it has come to this, etc etc. i've been an unreal user since 2008, and this is the worst the vibes have ever been. is there hope? perhaps www.joewintergreen.com/absolute-sta...

In truth, I chose to uninstall EGS specifically because of the terrible decisions made by Mr. Sweeney, decisions he is double downing on and forcing upon EGS devs and users. Whatever Tim or the company chooses to do, whatever game is made free, whatever deal they offer, I will not be re-installing.

The only game I've bought that's on EGS is Horizon Chase 2 And I bought it through Humble Bundle, not realizing it was EGS-exclusive until afterward Every other game in my library there was one of the free ones

Launchers are a big thing to people for reasons I don't understand, but I do know people really don't like EGS. Seems this was news to Tim Sweeney though. I feel weird that I knew more about his company than he did, I'm not the CEO.

I've collected a bunch of free games on EGS; I've functionally used it as a demo system, and if I like the game, have bought it elsewhere (Steam / Playstation).

i've seen a few games that i wanted when they were excluisive on egs, and the occasional free game i'd like, but the idea of installing it on my PC feels like deliberately stepping in a cow turd

I'll be the first to admit I bought a few games on EGS back in its infancy but I haven't done so in years. There's no reason to anymore.

the most baffling part is that they had a good thing. Giving out free games was a great way to draw people to your store. But then they just had to be just the biggest most enormous asshole about buying exclusive rights to random indie games, while not spending a dime improving their store

Like how did it take them multiple years to add such basic features like a shopping cart or a customer review system (which still sucks btw) when they're making billions of dollars a year from fortnite and unreal? It just makes zero sense

I never had an issue with the exclusives. Good money while it lasted for the folks who could get it. Not putting any effort at all into making it a basically-working program though? Insane

I think the exclusive backlash wouldn't have been so bad if they weren't so aggressive with it. When they started sniping kickstarted games and games that were like two weeks away from coming out is when I think people got really pissed

yeah that's the main issue, it felt like they were wasting money buying indie games instead of spending it actually making the store good There were also multiple games that were promised to have a day 1 steam launch that went back on their promise because of the epic buyouts which also stung

Love your takes! could you add alt text in the future? (Bsky has a setting to show a reminder for media lacking it) I've got some followers that require alt, so I'm not reposting you but would love to

You know the saying "if a tree falls, and there's no one around, does it make a sound?", EGS is like that. I thought they would invest in making the STORE aspect of the Store more usable as years went by but it's a hassle to even browse your own library, the priorities are completely backwards.

That's how Square-Enix treated Kingdom Hearts's exclusivity stint on EGS There were rumors when it later launched on Steam that internally they were treating the Steam release as the real PC release, basically pretending the EGS exclusivity period never happened

It is very strange to me that epic went to great and vocal lengths to create an alternative to steam and they put in a store front that let you kind of clumsily purchase games and then said "Okay, that's enough. Wrap it up and never look at it again, we have achieved feature parity."
