don't let the phoned-in visuals of the Halo remake off the hook by scapegoating Unreal imo. if something looks boring it's because someone boring made it

The problem I see is that since "realism" sells, it's all game artists are trained in. And since that's what they know, it's what's easiest, so the cycle continues. An original art style would be more difficult and costly, but is absolutely worth it

More importantly realism is a universal standard. Everybody's trying to do the same thing, if you know how to do realism you can work on anything realistic, there's no standard for stylized art (& there shouldn’t be)

the fatiguing "photorealistic" (imo it isn't... real life doesn't look like that) look of halo campaign evolved or the many other games that look like that is not a function of any engine, it's not a default, it's boring people falling slightly short of boring goals

what you're looking at is what happens when someone is so blind to art that they look at halo 1 and literally don't even notice it's a cartoony game with huge manga influences, the game the Oni people made after Oni. it has nothing to do with technology

this has been a repeated issue since after halo 2. They just went around the long way to finish the job to erase anything that isn't this quasi-realism greebled mil-scifi look. But maybe halo 1 was the outlier and the actual intended shape of the series is what the remake displays.

The game the Oni people made after Oni *and* the game that was broadly meant to be a successor to the Marathon series. Which, y'know, that's an FPS trilogy that had sprites that looked very hand drawn and almost like they were maybe supposed to look comic book-ish or something like that. So.

it is endemic, this. you might suffer from it yourself. people think half-life 1 was trying for realism and do realistic remakes of that. they were hand painting textures and doing pixel art

I think it's interesting to look at how many games have a more realistic bend in their stylization and get mistaken for full on realism. I often think of Metroid Prime when thinking of that phenomenon myself... and that the remaster seemingly *understood* that with its visual updates to my surprise

i think there's a whole lot of room to do something modern and interesting with halo visually but you gotta be interested in it. realism is attractive because you can do it "right". you can be correct. nobody can say you didn't do what you meant to do. just ideally you wouldn't have meant to do that
