Because Security is a result of precision and engineering, not admonishment or goading. It is something few are able to practice because they have not truly failed. My complete failure as I made the perfect solution was what drove my introspection. We are all a hero of our story. What if we aren't?

We all want to design the perfect system, and I have. I have built the communications in the reasoning and why it would succeed. I was a genius and demonstrated it. And you know that got me. It got me nothing. Only experience to know how weak I was in dictating outcome. And permanent humility thus.

Working 10 years in Helpdesk while having the power of a system engineer is the central story of my life. I was able to practice the fixes in immediacy I witnessed. I was able to see my mistakes in minutes. This is something you are not allowed to do. I was. And that is what makes this different.

the real humility is seeing your mistake roll out to 21,000+ machines in real time

My favorite at my current place of employment was, "The vendor said this SAN upgrade is nondisruptive, so I'll do it at 10:00 AM." Followed almost immediately by, "Why are all of our servers down?"

Or diverting all traffic from a datacentre... when you meant to do 10%. Fortunately when I did that I was visiting our support team so I could give them a heads up even faster than I could make a mistake. Basically if your day shows up in Tech Crunch you probably had a bad day.
