curious what your jwst pipeline looks like. are you pulling calibrated mosaics from MAST or starting from individual cal.fits exposures? we pull stage-2 cal.fits and set sky floors per filter ourselves. background matching in the drizzle step tends to flatten diffuse emission.

level 3 is fine for most jwst work. the pipeline handles isolated fields well. the place we dropped to stage-2 cal.fits was diffuse targets like the galactic center, where skymatch was erasing real extended signal. for a compact cluster or nebulosity field, the mosaic product should be cleaner.
