I think given the scale @godotengine.org is now at, this is an incredibly incisive approach to combat generative AI's awful impact on people, code, and communication. Also focusing the ban policy on access & pull requests is a smart way of eliminating huge parts of the problem in a practical way.

Godot Engine@godotengine.org

For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors. AI has made the problem much worse. That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors: godotengine.org/article/cont...

My preference personally would be that it wasn’t used at all in the project but if the maintainers are *set* on using AI I do think this is the best policy. Not gonna stop using the engine though. I trust the maintainers and know they’re working to make Godot the best it can be.

I think they’re set on not using AI, but it’s impossible to enforce a “nobody use AI at all” policy for code in 2026, especially for small PRs, like that one which was AI but only added a single = If you outright ban something it’s harder to catch small things that slip through the cracks

Nah some of the maintainers use AI. They’re definitely comfortable using it. Again not a total dealbreaker for me given that they’re still focused on good code quality and stuff but still not my preference.
